Some: all read req books in curriculum
some: all choose books and create small groups if they would like
combination and I do not "teach" the novel at all. We learn from the reading together.
I teach at an alternative school and students usually do a common novel and also a self-selected novel in the class
I take turns doing ALL of the above
except small groups getting total choice. I let them choose from among 5. If you change it up
